Famous for its wonderful nature and rich cultural-historical heritage, Zadar region has also become a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. Whether an eager cyclist who wants to keep fit while on holiday, or a family that decides to actively explore the region, there are 3000 km of cycling routes currently to choose from. They vary in type and difficulty, from roadway tracks to off-road paths, along the coast or with difference in elevation.
The following suggestions not only encourage you to hop on the bike and be active, but also to do some sightseeing along the way:
With a bit over 20 kilometres, this route allows the cyclists to get to know Nin and the peninsula north of Zaton. There are hardly any elevations which means that it’s not particularly demanding and, yet, it has a lot to offer. It’s a circular route, so why not begin by riding to Nin, then to Sabunike, next cross the interior to get to Privlaka and, finally, head south to get back to Zaton. Or the other way around. In Nin, don’t miss the chance to get to know its charming historical peninsula, or to take in the amazing scenery from the lookout in Sabunike. Moving on towards Privlaka, you’ll discover a number of places of cultural-historical interest, such as the famous old wells and churches.
Northeast of Nin there is another peninsula worth exploring. The route is almost twice as long as the previous one with a bit more elevations, but just as picturesque. Situated on a hill, Vrsi is a village with an amazing view of the sea and the island of Pag. The next stop is Zečevo with a church often visited by pilgrims and famous because its geographical status changes from peninsula to islet depending on the tide. The route then takes cyclists along the coast through the village of Mulo and Zukvo, by the Nin Salt Factory and back to Zaton.
Another lighter cycling route leads into the Zadar hinterland. During summer, it’s highly recommended to start the trip early in the morning or late in the evening due to heat. It’s partly an off-road route going through the scenic fields. One of the highlights is the donkey farm, a particularly popular spot for kids.
One of the more challenging routes due to its length altogether, but also a very rewarding one, takes cyclists along the coast towards Zadar. Not only do they get to admire the lovely views of the sea along the trail through Diklo and Borik, but they also get to visit Zadar, ride along its ancient streets and modern suburbs. It’s one of those cycling routes that take up the whole day easily. It’s also one of the most exciting ways to get to know the coast and Zadar.
Or not. Naturally, it’s always wiser and safer to ride along the marked routes. However, why not let your curiosity take you off the route every now and then? That’s what exploring is all about. So, cycle and discover the less known attractions and become an expert on Zadar region.
